Patient Voices: Melor Weber
Overview
Nearly seven years ago, Missy Weber faced her first breast cancer diagnosis. “I had gone through cancer treatment and when COVID hit, I caught it but was initially asymptomatic. By the time I started showing symptoms, my lungs were severely compromised, and the damage was done. My oxygen levels were in the 30s and I needed to get to the hospital fast.”
The diagnosis
Nine months removed from her initial diagnosis, Missy felt a lump and quickly relayed the news to her oncologist. “I don’t like the feeling of this,” she said. “Neither do I,” replied her provider. Due to the damage caused by COVID and the effects of her previous cancer treatment, Missy needed a treatment plan that would target her cancer precisely while sparing her lungs. “My oncologist referred me to Texas Center for Proton Therapy, where I worked with Dr. Sturgeon and we made a game plan for my second round with breast cancer.”

The journey
Missy and her husband Tod drove to and from Prosper, Texas, daily over the course of several weeks. “I only missed five days of work, and that was because of a surgery I needed,” says Missy. Throughout treatment, she maintained a positive outlook, kept up with her work schedule and community volunteering, and even spent weekends touring Central Texas in search of the best barbecue. “We’re so thankful for the support we’ve had from our community, from Dr. Sturgeon, and the entire staff at the Texas Center for Proton Therapy. The front desk staff, radiation therapists, and nurses – everyone is so kind. It truly feels like coming home.”
Missy credits her faith, her community of fellow survivors, and her loved ones for getting through her second battle with breast cancer. “We threw everything we had at it – and my faith kept me strong on my hardest days. I remind myself every day that cancer has no control over me. I met so many wonderful and strong people over the course of my time at Texas Center for Proton Therapy. It has truly been a blessing to be treated here.”
